The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome vary widely from one person to the next and from one day to the next. Typically, the symptoms start as a tingling in the first three or four fingers. This tingling usually occurs in the evening after a hard day's work. We typically do not see the symptoms occurring during work. This is what we call the decompression response. That is, the pressure on the nerve during work due to poor wrist positions or excessive grip is not enough pressure to impair the nerve at that time. But when the pressure is released at the end of the day, the nerve is then allowed to swell. It is the swelling and its chemical changes that produce the symptoms.
